The world is getting better.
Poverty in the Third World is falling. War and many kinds of violence are declining. That’s progress.
OK, you might reply, but what about the scourge of global warming? Isn’t it leading us to disaster?
Well, there is now some good news on climate change. Global warming seems to have hit a plateau. Global surface temperatures have not risen over the past 15 years or so.
The Daily Mail says it has obtained a leaked draft of the IPCC’s Fifth Assessment Report due out later this year. A version of this graph appears in it:
There has been no statistically significant increase in the world’s average temperature since January 1997. Overall, the earth has warmed 0.5 degrees over the past 50 years. But for the past 16 years there has been no more warming.
If the plateau turns out to be valid, it is the best news in a long while.
