Empires and Enduring Artifacts

Here’s a new complaint against the European empires. Michael Mann says they left “cheap buildings”:

there are no great enduring cultural artifacts, the equivalent of Mayan temples, Roman arenas, or the Great Wall of China… Shoddy empires leave few traces.

This is more simple-minded anti-Westernism.
