Multiple Modernities, Multiple Agrarias, and Multiple Foragias?

It is sometimes said (by sociologists and others) that there are “multiple modernities” – meaning several different ways of being modern. It seems to me a reasonable idea. Japan is modern but not in the same way as Dubai or Norway.

If there are multiple modernities, then were there also multiple agrarias, several ways of being agrarian? If so, were there multiple foragias, several regional forms of hunter-gatherer society? If so, why? What are the basic reasons for such social and cultural multiplicity? How low ago does one need to look for the roots of multiplicity?
