The Civilized, the Free, the Oppressed

Arnold Kling has a rather neat scheme on the differences between conservatives, libertarians, and progressives. Conservatives emphasize a civilization-barbarism axis, libertarians are concerned with a liberty-coercion axis, and progressives stress a oppressed-oppressor axis.
He has applied the model of three axes to attitudes to the 60s and the Middle East.
It is a simplification, but I think an illuminating one. Consider attitudes to the West: oppressor and imperialist, fount of liberty, or civilized accomplishment? These three rival views are commonly found.
Myself? I am inclined to try and combine them.
