Styles of Scientific Reasoning

Alistair Crombie distinguishes six different styles of scientific thinking:

  1. Mathematical postulation and proof
  2. Experiment
  3. Hypothetical modelling
  4. Taxonomy
  5. Statistical
  6. Historical-genetic (evolutionary)
  7. [plus one might add] Case studies

I seem to incline to the historical-genetic, with a dash of taxonomic, and a seasoning of statistical.
