Time for a Change at the Margin

Standard paper size of 8.5 x 11 inches was optimized for typewriters, not for printer fonts. So what to do?
(a) One inch margin and double spaced lines is the convention. But it is wasteful and hard to read.
(b) Wide margins, with marginalia in them. Interesting but perhaps hard to format. How wide a margin is optimal? Should they be equal or uneven widths?
(c) Two columns. Oddly enough, I used to print double columns to save paper and make reading easier, until I gave in to the forces of convention. I vow henceforth to depart from convention.
Eventually, let us hope convention changes.
